The USS Michigan Landing Party commemorates the Sailors and Marines who served aboard the USS Michigan during the Civil War. Launched in 1842, the USS Michigan was the first iron-hulled warship in the US Navy. It was both sail and steam powered. Rated a steam powered frigate it sailed the Great Lakes during the Civil War. Among its duties was guarding the Confederate prisoners on Johnson’s Island in Lake Erie near current day Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.
